Visual Arts 11/Advanced Visual Arts 11

Second Semester

Visual Arts 11 expands on the skills learned in Visual Arts 10. Students will assume more ownership of their own art education, creating works of greater personal relevance, sophistication, and intensity. Students will learn to clearly articulate perceptions of their own art as well as the art of their peers, popular media imagery, and of art masters. Students will enhance their capacity to draw and respond to a range of visual and conceptual subjects while also engaging with greater depth, a range of wet and dry media, digital media, sculpture and a variety of elective media. Visual Art 11 also exposes students to studies in art history, contemporary art and art theory. Advanced Visual Arts 11 is designed for exceptional students who are considering future studies in the visual arts or careers in related fields. It is offered in the same setting as Visual Arts 11 however students in Advanced Visual Arts 11 must have exceptional aptitude in the technical aspects of art making, demonstrate deep insights into the artmaking processes, and must have a keen interest and a sense of wonder. The expectations and workload are significantly more demanding and involve significant additional work outside the regular school day in order to complete a body of work and to engage in developing and maintaining community links. Students must have a demonstrated ability for academic discipline intrinsic to the visual arts as well as the ability to work with rigor and independence. Students will be required to maintain an artist’s journal or sketchbook, make observational drawings, complete a community links component, and participate in a final exhibition.
